F.A.Q.

F.A.Q. – What to Expect

Welcome to the Florida International Carpenters Apprenticeship. This page is for anyone considering the program or supporting someone who is. Below are some of the most common questions about the journey ahead.

How do apprentices get paid?

Apprentices are paid directly by the participating employer who sponsors them. These employers are part of our trusted program network and rely on apprentices as part of their workforce. This is not unpaid training—apprentices are earning while learning. The Schooling itself is also sponsored by the employer, so other than some basic tools, room & board, food, and transportation there will be no costs!

Is 40 hours of work guaranteed every week?

No work in construction is ever guaranteed. However, most apprentices work full time. Employers need apprentices just as much as apprentices need work. Overtime is sometimes available depending on job demands, and when it occurs, it counts 1:1 toward your 8,000-hour requirement—plus overtime pay.

Do I need a high school diploma or GED?

Yes. The committee believes that if the military requires a high school diploma or GED, our apprentices should meet the same standard. We’re training people for a career that requires responsibility, professionalism, and leadership.

What happens if I miss too many workdays or don’t show up?

Like any job, showing up matters. Excessive unexcused absences may result in being removed from the program. This apprenticeship is designed for individuals who are ready to commit, work hard, and represent the future of the trade with pride—locally, nationally, and beyond.

Where does training happen?

Training is delivered in a hybrid format:

  • Online instruction (2–4 hours per week)
  • In-person training at employer warehouses or classrooms
  • Jobsite learning on real projects (NASA, military, commercial builds, etc.)

What certifications will I earn?

Apprentices will complete approximately 832 hours of related technical instruction covering:

  • OSHA 10 and 30
  • Fall Protection
  • Forklift and Aerial Equipment Safety
  • Blueprint Reading and Construction Math
  • Framing, Roofing, Flooring, and Finish Carpentry
  • Green Building Practices
  • Fire Prevention, Rigging, Project Management, and more

A full certification list is available in our program standards.

How long is the program?

The apprenticeship takes approximately 4 years to complete, including:

  • 8,000 hours of paid on-the-job training
  • 832 hours of classroom or online learning

Apprentices who take on overtime, weekend, or extra work hours can accelerate their progress.

What happens after I finish?

Graduates receive a Journeyman Credential and a full resume of real work experience and certifications. This opens the door to commercial, federal, and union work opportunities across the country. It’s not the end—it’s the start of a real career.
